Paperless avoids the dungeon

One of the great things about the Gunwel office is that we are a paperless office. For a tax and bookkeeping office that simply means that the rows and rows of metal filing cabinets are not present. All client files and paper documents are stored, securely, in the cloud (that’s the new term for cyberspace for those of us that didn’t know). In the old days when a client called for a copy of a past tax return we would go to the filing room “dungeon” (always having to dust yourself off afterwards), pull the file and fax it to the client, or mail out the hard copy. Being a paperless office means a few keystrokes later and the document is emailed to the client, and dredging to the dungeon room is no longer necessary.

I’m one of those tax guys that learned my trade by using pencils, ledger sheets and a big 10-key calculator. Once we went paperless I didn’t miss the feeling of the paper and the smell of the freshly sharpened lead pencil, it was actually quicker and more efficient. I’ve been trying to decide if I want to get a Kindle or an Ipad for my book library, but I like the feel of a book and wonder if my Evelyn Wood speed reading will be affected by not touching paper. Hmmm.
