Shopping is similar to everything BAD that happened to me in high school.

October 29, 2010

Too crowded for meSince I have been living in NYC I find the shopping experience unlike anywhere else in the world. Here’s the thing…going to Macy’s (or any other large, over crowded department store, and let’s include the M&M Factory) is like a shopping experience that is similar to everything bad that ever happened to me in high school. Okay so now you know I never liked high school…LOL. The saving grace is that I’ve learned to shop online and I’m a much happier shopper that way. But is it really safe?

As the online buying season kicks into high gear, scammers are out in force too. I. Mangla of Money Magazine gives us six steps to protect ourselves.

  •  Be Leery, don’t open attachments or click on links if they seem at all suspicious.
  • Invest In Protection, buy a full suite of security software.
  • Stay Up To Date, your web browser and operating system are also vital to protecting your information. Make sure both are configured to get updates.
  • Go Direct, to steer clear of websites that look like Amazon.com, say or BestBuy.com but are actually fakes set up to steal your data, don’t click on links to get to those e-commerce sites – type the URL directly into your browser.
  • Scan For Security, once you’re checking out make sure you are on a secure page; the address should begin with “https” not “http”. The “s” indicates an encrypted connection, so even if your financial information is intercepted it can’t be read.
  • Never Shop In Public, your computer is more vulnerable on a public wireless network as you don’t know what security is in place.

Sure, this may seem like a crowded effort to buy some Christmas gifts, but the thought of deciding which Macy’s door to enter is as daunting as being the last picked for dodgeball. At GAI (www.gunwel.com) we try to make your experience with us as easy and stress free as possible. Give us a call at 212-979-6830 or stop by for a visit. We are open year round and will be here to swap “war- shopping stories” with you. See you soon!
