Just Because It’s Common Doesn’t Mean It’s Right!

November 21, 2010

Lots of married folks hide purchases from their partners – to the detriment of their relationships. Some 80% of all married people hide some purchases from their mates, according to a 2010 survey by CESI Debt Solutions. And men are actually, somewhat more likely to routinely do so than women. And these little green lies do have potential to damage your finances and your relationship.

Often times when I have done financial planning for couples there has been such an uneasiness when communicating how each one of them viewed spending (both together and jointly). So many factors affect why we view money  and finances (in general) the way we do. My philosophy has always been one of non-judgement and anything is possible as long as we communicate honestly and (hopefully) openly.

Here is a list of what couples have spent their cash on:

  • Clothing Or Accessories: Men 25%, Women 43%
  • Alcohol: Men 19%, Women 8%
  • Music: Men 14%, Women 6%
  • Gifts: Men 12%, Women 21%
  • Dating Websites: Men 4%, Women 1%

As I’ve always said finances are an intimate (and often times scary) subject in a relationship. At GAI ( we can offer you help in so many ways. Give us a call at 212-979-6830 or stop by for a visit.  See you soon.
