Career Change At What Age?!?

December 15, 2010

Urban Meyer has caused quite the uproar these days with his life altering decision to step down as the head coach of the Florida Gators  football team from the University of Florida. Meyer who is best known for bringing the Florida Gators to two BCS National Championship games is leaving it all behind to spend more time with his family. Urban Meyer has gotten a lot of slack for his choice to step down especially now when it seems the Gators need him the most. Much like the backlash and reprimand I received when I decided not to go to law school after taking my LSAT. My family was super upset but I had a change of heart, besides I realized I wouldn’t look good in grey suits because how else do you emulate Matlock? Which was my entire reason for even wanting to be a lawyer in the first place but I digress.

Urban Meyer is just another testament to the saying, a change in any age. Whether you are stepping down from an illustrious 10 year coaching position or simply invoking a premature stroke to your loved ones, everyone has the right to go in any direction at any moment in their lives. I still think about perhaps retaking my LSAT and enrolling in law school and becoming the female Benjamin Matlock but law school isn’t going anywhere so maybe in the next twenty years. Urban Meyer may return to coaching in the future but as of right now he plans to keep away from the pressure grind.

Life is uncertain and age should not hold us back from moving into a new career path. Perhaps you are a cardiologist who always wanted to be a pastry chef or a teacher who wants to be a fisherman. Well go for it!!  This isn’t the generation where we need to have it all figured out and set by the time we are twenty, thirty or forty. There are a ton of options afforded to us, so if you don’t mind being the topic for the family therapist or the tabloids, then take advantage of them. Let us at Gunwel Associates Inc (  help you in your new venture by taking care of all your Tax and Bookkeeping needs. It is that time of year when we offer year-end tax reviews (for free!) so give us a call at 212-979-6830 or stop by for a visit.
