Selling Yourself in 30 Seconds.

Have you ever heard of that saying, you will know if you like someone within the first five minutes of meeting them? Now imagine if it was only one minute or 30 seconds. Is that enough time to judge if there is something you like or not? According to an article I read in The New York Times, it sure is. The article discusses the best ways to pitch an idea or sell yourself in a quick 30 seconds, one minute tops. You could be pitching a new sales technique at work or trying to land that hottie you’ve had your eye on. Either way as long as you are concise, extremely clear and above all communicative half a minute is all you really need. My favorite part of the article was this fantastic quote, “I learned that everybody needs as much communication as possible-you can’t over-communicate.” (tell that to my ex-you say nagging I say communicate…tomato…tamato)

I’m going to give you two scenarios in which a 30 second pitch is all you really need. Lets start at work first. Whether you work for a super stuffy corporate company or a cool laid back happy-go-lucky office (like mine!) the 30 second pitch will work for all. You have an amazing idea about an upcoming project or have a suggestion on how to make the intra office policies more efficient. You want to tell your boss but can’t take up too much of their time. Ready for it?

  • Be Clear and Know What Your Talking About– Don’t beat around the bush, make sure your main point is the focus and know exactly how to answer any questions your boss may have.
  • Communicate– Make sure you have spoken to any department or person you may need to in order to obtain additional information your boss may need while considering your idea. Do the research.
  • Keep it Short and Sweet– Get to the point already! Don’t lose sight of what your goal is. Remember, a good 30 seconds will gain you another five minutes-so be ready for that too.

Now for scenario two. The wonderful world of dating. You have had your eye on this super cute guy/gal and don’t know what to say. Surprisingly the same notions from above apply with a bit of tweaking.

  • Be Clear– Say hello, how are you, in a confident voice. There is no place for the meek here. Remember, I said confident, not arrogant.
  • Communicate– Speak to the special guy/gal as if they were just that, a person. Keep eye contact and don’t keep looking at those pecs or cleavage line.
  • Keep them Wanting to Talk More– Speak intelligently, and don’t just say hi and run away. You want to open the door for, wait are you ready…communication!
