Sleepless in Staten Island.

January 28, 2011

In case you haven’t noticed, we are having quite an issue with the snow lately. This is the snowiest January in history and our latest storm is just another reminder that this white mess isn’t going away any time soon. Like many New Yorker’s, I had only anticipated a wintry mix so you could imagine my surprise when I woke up and was greeted by a stack of snow. Good job dropping the ball on that one mister meteorologist. Sadly, I don’t think relief from the blizzard blues will come any time soon. For my avid blog readers you will remember a thing called the Chandler Wobble. Do you ever remember your grandparents saying, when I was a kid we walked 4 miles in huge walls of snow with no shoes on? Welcome back ladies and gentlemen. On the bright side though, we do own shoes.

It has been known that winters like this would come and stay for a long time. Now that we are here, how can we get our transportation and road clean-ups strong enough to handle it? Yesterday the MTA suspended all buses city-wide, keeping me stuck in Staten Island. While my cats were thrilled to have me home, being stuck inside isn’t very fun. The city can’t afford to have massive shut downs due to Mother Nature, literally. NYC has already run out of its $38 million snow removal budget. Last year alone the city spent over $63 million to keep the roads snow free. It takes approximately $2 billion just to keep the department of sanitation running each year. Whoa, that’s a lot of mullah. Wait, aren’t we in a recession? Isn’t the economy in crisis? So wouldn’t it make sense that the people who are working and spending money be able to get to work on a daily basis? With cities pretty much shut down, the monetary losses could be devastating. Mother nature is a powerful force, it’s her way or the highway(or not with our roads), so let’s work with her MTA and keep our city running.
