The New Smart Car.

January 30, 2011

Have you ever wished you could combine all the awesome applications from your smart phone into your car? Well guess what, pretty soon you can. Car companies like Toyota, Ford and Mercedes-Benz are producing fully connected cars. Instead of the usual GPS, your car will now be equipped with apps for mapping, movie show times, restaurant reviews and reservations and online radio. You will have instant access to the internet with the turn of your ignition thanks to iPhone and Android. All voice controlled of course because you can’t safely drive and do a google search at the same time. The days of needing a Bluetooth connection just may be over. The newer models will be totally smart phone compatible, in an effort let people stay connected to their digital lives at all times. The best part of using smartphone applications is it eliminates the need to update the computer chip for the car. GPS systems need to be updated however much else in the car’s computer can’t be updated. Any updates that can be done, will be costly. iPhone and Android applications are constantly updating themselves, no downloaded needed. No trips to the mechanic and costly additional bills.

The largest used application  in cars right now is Pandora, a free web-based radio. Pandora has a user base of over 80 million but many are wondering if something that is free on their phone will now cost them more when purchasing a new car. The answer is no. Pandora is not factored into the price of your new connected car. What you are paying for are all the other applications and the ability of complete voice control. Some cars will even allow you to use applications you already have on your phone, at an additional charge of course. In many cases, you can synch your whole car with the touch of one button. Seems pretty cool to me.

At GAI (www.gunwel.com) we would love to hear what features you are most looking forward to seeing in your next car. I would love some sort of traffic avoidance application. So give us a call at 212-979-6830 or stop by and visit to share your thoughts!! See you soon!!
