Wal Mart Did What?

February 23, 2011

I am the first to admit that I have a love-hate relationship with Oprah. There are moments when I really dig what she is doing and there are moments when I scratch my head. In a recent episode where Celine Dion was introducing her twins and showing off her huge house, Oprah also had introduced a couple that had sextuplets (yeah 6 kids). A picture of the dad with his sleeping kids caught Oprah’s eye and she had to have them on. After hearing their “story” she decided to help them out. Her friends at Wal-Mart gave them a store credit of $250,000. Celine’s friends at Cesar’s Palace gave them a honeymoon trip (they never were able to take a honeymoon) where they were gifted a major suite (with butler) and, of course, tickets to see Celine’s show (I saw it folks, and walked away scratching my head?). Oprah was carrying on about this quarter-of-a-million-dollar store credit, sharing that this would keep them going for many years. BTW the husband has a carpet cleaning business (which she mentioned, hoping that he would get more business with her mention…of course it will, ever hear of the book club?)  and they participated in fertility treatments in order to get these babies.

I’m not jealous. Sure it would be great if Oprah gave Gunwel Tax & Bookkeeping a shout out. But I’m thinking about what $250,000 could do for folks in a depressed community, or any community for that matter. Let say Wal-Mart gave 50 families $5000. in store credit…that would could feed a family for a year. Yes it can at $100 a week in groceries. Why does one family get that special treatment, because they choose to have fertility treatments and Oprah liked their picture? No not fair. I don’t complain about one person winning the mega lottery or my sister Jody winning the pie eating contest simply because she had an eating disorder (ok, I did that year at the county fair when I would’ve won). But when a corporation like Wal-Mart has the ability to do something like this, then spread the gift. In a time when finances are tight everywhere and television shows glorify what a company like Wal-Mart can do, then do it more often and for more people…

And there are those of you that just say “life is not fair, get over it.” Sure, but if we all sit by and accept injustice, then shame on us. At GAI ( we are hardworking folks that look to do the right thing. When it comes to your taxes we always do the right thing. You work hard for your money, let us work smart to help you keep it! We all don’t have friends like Wal-Mart in our back pocket, but you will always have a friend at Gunwel. Call us at 212-979-6830 or stop by and see us as we’d love to hear your thoughts on this and all other financial matters. See you soon!

Interesting points! What if the couple and kids and not been photogenic? What if Oprah DID give a shout out to a whole bunch of businesses; especially those located in particular economic areas where the input of business would be spread through the local economy?
    Love/Hate Wal-Mart? Yea, they are a conundrum!

Right on Bill. If you had that kind of power why not use it in mass.

Great points made and on target to what I think every time I see that “Home Makeover” show that is on Sunday nights!

Though certainly deserving of help, I do always ask myself why give them ALL the help, when so many others need it too! Instead of one “incredible” home, why not several “really nice” homes?

Great points made and keep up the outstanding work!

    All the best!

Thanks Michael, I too, feel that same way when I see shows like that. Somehow common sense gave to way ratings and greed!
