IBM’s Watson Beat By A Congressman.

March 3, 2011

Step aside Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, Congressman Rush Holt has defeated the  Jeopardy computer winner, Watson. On February 28th, five members of Congress, including technology slayer Rush Holt, played a mock Jeopardy game at Capitol Hill with Congressman Holt’s final count of $8,600 beating Watson’s $6,200. So who is Rush Holt you ask? According to an article I read from the Surge Desk at AOL, Rush Holt is a “machine-conquering superhuman” who is the New Jersey Democratic Representative of the 12th district. He has served in Congress since 1999 and even has some real Jeopardy experience. More than 30 years ago, Rush Holt was a 5 time Jeopardy champion.

It seems this self-proclaimed science nerd and real life rocket scientist, who has earned his master’s and Ph.D. in physics, is in for more than he bargained for. Since Watson’s embarrassing and crushing defeat to a mere human, IBM’s Watson is reported as declaring a rematch, telling Rush Holt to watch out. Although Watson came out the overall winner, defeating the other 4 contestants, his loss to Rush Holt is considered unacceptable by IBM. In this congressional man vs. machine showdown, Watson’s trivia genius seemed to be no match for Holt, although while his education was an advantage, there was something else. Rush Holt said the secret is to push the button before you even think you know the answer. Doesn’t sound like rocket science to me but what do I know.

The mock Jeopardy game was done in an effort to emphasize the need for increased math and science education (good luck convincing Mayor Bloomberg on that one) and to bolster the U.S. global competitiveness. It seems this game also gave IBM something to think about, how to make Watson unbeatable. Until then, bravo Congressman Rush Holt. I guess the saying is true, sometimes it does take a rocket scientist.
