What Your Barista Wont Tell You.

The customer service industry is one of the hardest fields to be employed in. For starters, you need to be a people person. You have to become accustomed to dealing with all types of people all day long. Nice ones, rude ones, extremely rude ones, clean ones and even smelly ones. It generally helps to have a thick skin and in some cases a can of lysol handy. One day I was waiting in line for my coffee and I wondered what it would be like to be a barista and deal with people in a rush for their morning coffee fix. One woman in particular was ahead of me and not the biggest ray of sunshine. She asked for a non-fat latte and them complained because she could taste the fat. She scolded the barista like she was a child and the barista apologized nicely and made her another latte. I wondered what she was really thinking. So I was delighted to read an article in Shine magazine about the 10 things baristas won’t tell you. It will definitely make you think twice before getting snappy with the person behind the counter.

  1. Your daily latte, even non-fat, is still very bad for you.
  2. That premium cup of coffee is sometimes just Folgers poured into the expensive canisters.
  3. The barista isn’t deaf. If you asked for decaf, believe me, she heard you.
  4. If you aren’t in Starbucks, don’t order like you are.
  5. Don’t like the wait, it’s your fault. If you spent less time on the phone you would know what you wanted to order prior to getting to the register.
  6. Vegan treats does NOT mean its healthy. They are loaded with sugar.
  7. Yes, that barista actually went to school for this. Starbucks sends their baristas to a 2 week training to learn about the history of coffee and the entire menu.
  8. A bigger cup doesn’t mean for coffee. It means more milk, so if its extra caffeine you want your better off with an espresso shot.
  9. Latte art isn’t just for looks. If you see a floating foam heart or star on your latte that means it was made correctly. If the foam consistency isn’t good enough it wont hold a good picture and your drink wasn’t made well.
  10. BE NICE!! My mother told me there were two people in life you never got nasty with. Those who served your food and those who handle your finances. Do you really want someone to screw up something you are going to ingest? I don’t think all iced coffee’s come with a shot of spit. Regardless of what you do for a living, at least you’re doing something so be respectful. You’d be surprised how far a smile, please and thank you can go.
