My fish oil pills don’t help?

September 13, 2012

My Doctor told me several months back that I should take 2 fish oil pills a day as part of my diet; that it would be great for my heart. My vet told me several months back that Tess & Loretta (my two labs) should be on fish oil tablets (2 tablets at each meal) as it will benefit their heart, make their coats glow and just all around be great for them. I was excited as I have bought these giant bottles of fish oil pills and I make a production of us taking our daily vitamins together…sortof of an ongoing bonding thing that we do (“dog lovers” you know what I am talking about!). But then I read that a Study says omega-3 fish oil pills don’t help.

Taking fish oil pills rich in omega-3 fatty acids doesn’t appear to have a significant effect on heart attacks, strokes or death, a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Assocaition finds. The news comes as sales of fish oil supplements are booming. In 2011 Americans spent $1.1 billion on them, up 5.4% from 2010. Researchers reviewed 20 well-designed clinical trials that looked at health outcomes of people taking Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplements derived from fish oils. The trials, from 1989 to 2012, included 68,680 people studied for at least a year. No statistically significant association was found between pills and all deaths, cardiac deaths, sudden deaths, heart attacks or even strokes.

The medical field long ago noted that societies with diets high in fatty fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel had lower rates of heart disease. A large 1989 study found that men who had a heart attack and changed their diets to include more fatty fish were 29% less likely to die in the next two years. Because of these and other findings, many medical groups suggest that people at risk for heart disease either increase their fatty fish intake or take omega-3 supplements. However, subsequent studies on Omega-3 supplements derived from fish were less clear. The study says that the message Americans may not want to hear is that eating healthy foods, not taking pills, is what keeps the heart healthy.

My Doctor disagrees as he says that the blood work speaks for itself when you look at the before and after of just taking the pills. I have not had any heart attacks, or even a stroke since taking these…but I am quite young (insert smiley face here). My dogs do get many compliments on how great their coats looks and Loretta’s hips are working fine (she has severe hip dysplasia). But more importantly it drives me crazy when the dance changes. How many times have you had good intentions to do something and it just gets all screwed up…just because. It’s funny how the universe works that way. For my family (yeah I’m talking about me and the dogs again) I’m going to keep taking the pills just to keep that bonding ritual going…besides the girls love the fish smell…I, not so much.
