Can tanning beds cause cancer?

October 9, 2012

Today in Nashville, it is about 60 degrees and very crisp; you know that fall and winter is upon us when the joggers ware hoodies and the tanning salons have car parking issues. When I was in my early 20’s tanning salons (and beds) seemed to be the new thing. I’m italian and I turn dark very easily without the use of a tanning bed, but in my 20s I still did what everyone else did…lay in those beds for 20 mins a day for ever…The BMJ (British medical journal) announced that at least 170,000 causes of skin cancer each year are linked to indoor tanning. Those cancers include basal-cell carcinomas and squamous-cell carcinomas, two common types of non-melanoma skin cancers that aren’t usually life-threatening. People who have never used indoor tanning are 29% more likely to develop basal-cell carcinomas than those who have never used them.

Indoor tanners are 67% more likely to develop the more serious squamous-cell carcinomas compared with those who have never tanned indoors. That suggests indoor tanning is responsible for about 5% of non-melanoma skin cancers, the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the USA. Non-melanoma skin cancers strike about one in five Americans during their lifetime, including 30% of whites. Those who started tanning indoors before age 25 had the highest skin cancer risk. Other research has linked indoor tanning to malignant melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified ultraviolet radiation from tanning beds as a Class 1 carcinogen, the same category as tobacco smoke and asbestos. Consumers are free to make informed choices about the benefits and risks of indoor tanning. UV exposure, whether from the sun or a sunbed, has many benefits. Research suggests ultraviolet radiation from tanning beds provides vitamin D. Scientists are studying the role of vitamin D in preventing health problems, but the studies use vitamin D supplements, not UV exposure.

As I said, I did my tanning thing before I was 25 years old..and (knock on wood) I have had no cancer issues. It is useful today to be as informed as possible before making any lifestyle type commitments (yes indoor tanning can be considered a life-style commitment – note the Jersey Shore kids).
